Selling Collectibles Safely Online
Selling collectibles online can be a great way to fund your hobby, but it comes with fees, shipping risk and scams. A bit of preparation goes a long way.
Choose where to sell
Options include large online marketplaces, hobby-specific sites and apps, local listing sites, social media groups, and local shops or shows. Each has different fees, buyer protection rules, audience and effort. Read the current fee schedule and seller policies before listing, since they change.
Price it right
Base your price on recent sold prices for true matches in similar condition, not on asking prices (see how to find what a collectible is worth). Account for fees and shipping so you know what you will actually receive.
Write a clear listing
Include the exact identification, honest condition, and all flaws, with your own photos. Clear listings attract serious buyers and reduce disputes.
Ship properly
- Cards: sleeve and top loader, then secure between stiff cardboard or in a bubble mailer. Use tracked shipping for anything of meaningful value.
- Comics: bag and board, sandwiched between stiff boards in a sturdy box or mailer.
- Vinyl: remove the record from the jacket (in its inner sleeve) to prevent seam splits, and use a proper record mailer.
- Sneakers: in their original box inside a separate shipping box.
Keep tracking information and photos of the packed item. Consider insurance and signature confirmation for valuable items.
Common scams to watch for
- Overpayment scams: a buyer sends more than the price and asks for a refund of the difference. The original payment often turns out to be fraudulent.
- Off-platform payment requests: being asked to move the conversation or payment off the marketplace usually removes your protection.
- Fake payment notifications: always check your account directly instead of trusting an email or screenshot.
- Item swaps on returns: a buyer returns a different or damaged item. Record serial numbers, certification numbers and photos before shipping.
- Address changes after purchase: ship only to the address on the order, as marketplace protections usually require.
Meeting locally
If you sell in person, meet in a public, well-lit place; some police departments offer safe exchange spots. Bring a friend, and use secure payment methods.
Keep records
Track what you sell, fees and costs. Selling income may have tax implications depending on where you live and how much you sell.
The short version
Compare marketplaces' current fees and policies, price from sold data, write honest listings, ship carefully with tracking, stay on-platform, and watch for common scams.
